Emended diagnosis: Holes or pits with circular or subcircular outline in hard skeletal substrates, commonly perpendicular to subperpendicular to substrate surface. The holes penetrate directly through the substrate, whereas the pits end within the substrate as a shallow to moderately deep depression or short pit, with or without a central boss. Both pits and holes are cylindrical, subcylindrical, or conical in vertical cross-section (after Bromley, 1981; Nielsen and Nielsen, 2001; Blissett and Pickerill, 2007; Zonneveld and Gingras, 2014.
