Graptoliidid

Taksoni iseloomustus

Graptoliidid on tänapäevaks väljasurnud koloniaalsed ürgkeelikloomad (Hemichordata). Nende fossiilid on enamasti tumedad orgaanilisest ainest pulga- või põõsalaadsed moodustised, suurusega mõnest millimeetrist kuni kümnete sentimeetriteni. Lähemal vaatlusel on koloonias eristatavad üksikindiviidide torukeselaadsed elukambrid e. teekad. Kõrvutiastsevate teekadega koloonia rootsud meenutavad saehambaid.

Graptoliitide hulgas oli nii planktilise kui bentilise eluviisiga vorme. Planktilistel graptoliitidel on oluline roll Ordoviitsiumi ja Siluri stratigraafias – suur hulk globaalse geoloogilise ajaskaala üksuseid on defineeritud tuginedes just graptoliitidele.

Graptoliitide fossiilid esinevad kõige sagedamini süvašelfi setendites, eriti kiltades. Eesti aluspõhja madalmere lubjakivides on graptoliidid vähearvukad. Kõige sagedamini võime neid kohata Põhja-Eesti klindil paljanduvas Alam-Ordoviitsiumi graptoliitargilliidis (e 'diktüoneemakildas').
