Taksoni iseloomustus

Eesti ala Vanaaegkonnas elanud lõugsuused (Gnathostomata) jagunevad nelja suurde rühma: rüükalad ehk plakodermid (Placodermi), akantoodid (Acanthodii), kõrhkalad (Chondrichthyes) ja luukalad (Osteichthyes).

Luukaladest (Osteichthyes) leitakse Eesti aladelt Devoni ajastul elanud lihasuimseid (Sarcopterygii) kalu, keda esindavad kopskalad (Dipnoi), vihtuimseid (Crossopterygii) ja tetrapoodilaadseid (Tetrapodomorpha). Kivimites leidub kopskalade mikroskoopilisi soomuseid ja hambaplaate ning vihtuimsete üksikuid koljuluid ning soomuseid. Tervete soomuskatete ja koljude leiud on Eestis üliharuldased. Tetrapoodilaadsetest on teada ainult üks leid, mitme hambareaga Livoniana multidentata lõualuu. Hästi säilinud haruldaste eksemplaride poolest on rikas Läti, kust Lode savikarjäärist on kogutud haruldasi terveid kivistisi, sealhulgas ülemaailmselt tuntud neljajalgsete eellane Panderichthys rhombolepis.
