Rõngussid on suur ja mitmekesine hõimkond, mis ilmus Kambriumi ajastul ning on tänapäevani arvukas ja laialt levinud. Lisaks merelise eluviisiga polüheetidele ehk hulkharjasussidele kuuluvad rõngusside hulka ka kaanid ja väheharjasussid (viimaste hulgas ka vihmaussid).
Kuna tegemist on valdavalt pehmekehaliste organismidega, siis nende säilimine fossiilsena on haruldane. Erandiks on skolekodondid - hulkharjasusside 'hambad', mis kuuluvad tavalisemate happeresistentsete mikrofossiilide hulka ka Eesti Ordoviitsiumi ja Siluri kivimites.
