Trichophycus Miller et Dyer, 1878

Hypichnial, thinly lined, smooth, oblique to sub-horizontal, simple cylinders stacked one upon another in the vertical plane. Up to five stacked cylinders are recognized, but ?single cylinders of the same size and appearance are also present on the same bedding plane. The cylinders are 6–11 mm wide. They can be traced on bedding surfaces for as far as 65 mm. The stacking of cylinders distinguishes this trace fossil from Palaeophycus. The geometry of ?Trichophycus suggests reworking of sediment by a feeding organism. Trichophycus Miller and Dyer refers mainly to cylindrical trace fossils with delicate striae (Osgood, 1970), but the formation of a series of upward-curved probes was recognized as the most characteristic feature of this ichnogenus (Geyer and Uchman, 1995).
