Arthropoda Siebold, 1848

Taksoni iseloomustus

Lülijalgsed ehk artropoodid on väga laialt levinud ja mitmekesine selgrootute loomade hõimkond, mis moodustab kõikidest tänapäeval elavatest liikidest umbes kolm neljandikku. Siia hõimkonda kuuluvad: lõugtundlased, hulkjalgsed, heksapoodid, vähid ning tänapäevaks väljasurnud trilobiidid. Lülijalgsetele iseloomulik kehaehitus - lüliline keha, lülilised jäsemed ning kõva kitiinist eksoskelett - ilmusid esmakordselt juba Kambriumi alguses. Viimase 540 miljoni aasta jooksul on kõik viis lülijalgsete alamhõimkonda kohastunud nii merelise, magedaveelise kui maapealse elukeskkonnaga.
